Reflecting on some of the exclusive mixes performed at Groove Cartel as we come closer to its One Year Anniversary.

Groove Cartel has been in the forefront of bringing “authentic street culture”, while being committed to reflect a “true representation” of South Africa’s position in music entertainment. The channel has hosted some of the best musical stars, gracing the audience with music they are less likely to hear on commercial platforms. In this article, we take a look at some of the exclusive mixes which not only moved bodies and heads, but also highlighted the authentic representation of the South African music space.

1. Gaba Cannal

The first person on the list is Gaba Cannal. His mix included a catalogue of unreleased music, as Gaba only recently released the songs on the 5th of March 2022. His latest EP (AGAPE EP) includes 5 songs from the mix which can be heard on the beautifully structured project. While he has featured vocalists on the project, the production is purely done by Gaba Cannal himself.

2. Kelvin Momo

Kelvin Momo has been consistent in penetrating the game, and his set was an indication of how he never runs out of exclusive music. The unreleased songs were later released when he dropped his latest album IVY LEAGUE – which from an opinion standpoint, is the best out of all his releases.

Kelvin’s mix also included songs from other artists, most notably “Inhliziyo” by Mas Musiq featuring Babalwa M. It becomes apparent that the purpose was to selflessly push or promote the music of his fellow colleagues in the music space.

The Ivy League creator showed how timeless his music is by including a song called 'Set Your Mind' where he features Stakev.

Kelvin Momo also brought a unique sound, which has a soulful effect to it. He also refers to the soulful exclusive piano sound as Private School, which was greatly emphasized in his previous album called 'Momo's Private School'.

3. Mdu Aka Trp

Mdu Aka Trp has been making giant leaps in the music game, allowing his work to speak for itself. His Groove Cartel set includes music that was unreleased at the time. In other words, his mix served as an instrument for introducing new music, while build hype for what he was about to release.

Several songs were released through his collaboration album 'Pretty Girls Love Amapiano 3', where he worked hand in hand with Kabza De Small. There are songs on that particular project which have not been officially released till today. For example, Track 5 on the mix (Mdu Aka Trp ft Semi tee – Blessing), is still officially unreleased.

Mdu was involved in the production of all his songs, which featured vocalists and other producers. The Groove Cartel set includes a mixture of vocals and instrumentals, including the sound of log drums.

It has been notably clear that exclusive or unreleased songs tend to attract higher views towards Groove Cartel’s channel as the songs are only accessible there until their official release.

4. Felo Le Tee

Felo Le Tee’s mix includes a combination of released as well as unreleased hit songs, with some being vocals while others being purely instrumentals.

Songs like Bambelela (FELO LE TEEE x DBN GOGO x YOUNG STUNNA x PAPI COOPER) were unreleased song at the time of his Groove Cartel performance, and are now being hyped on social media while also being pushed on the streets. Felo has posted videos on social media playing the song at events, he even has a dance challenge for it.

What makes this mix so great is that the songs played here have become hits today, most notably Di PATJE & 66. Felo Le Tee is also involved in the production of his songs that are included in the mix.

5. Njelic

Njelic’s set included songs from other artists, such as Mdu aka Trp, Kabza de Small, Stakev, Villosoul and more. Few of the songs were exclusive and unreleased at the time, they were later dropped by Kabza de Small & Mdu aka Trp in their collaboration album: "Pretty Girls Love Amapiano".

Njelic is a Dj/vocalist, using his set to promote/push other artists' songs through his mix. He also included songs where he is featured as a vocalist (Kabza de Small ft Njelic – Angelina).

Njelic’s mix included instrumental piano songs (SGIJA) at first and then later included vocal songs towards the end of the mix. Have yourself a nice experience by listening to mix.

6. DJY JAIVANE

As most people know, Djy Jaivane regularly releases mixtapes (Simnandi & XpensiveCelection) of unreleased hits to introduce fans to his music before releasing official singles from the project.

Songs from his Groove Cartel mix are also included in his own mix from Simnandi Records, with the core purpose of pushing the songs through introducing them to listening ears.

Several songs on the mix have not been officially released till today, furthermore Jaivane plays both his produced songs, as well as songs from other producers. This helps push/promote other artists too, most of them being artists who are signed to Djy Jaivane’s Record Label, Simnandi Records. Djy Jaivane is pushing his own brand, as well as artists from Simnandi Records which include Amu Classic, Kappie, Lee Mc Krazy, Sinny Man’Que, Spizzy, and many more.

His sound is also different from other producers which is why he refers to it as Private school Piano. Listen for yourself.

7. Josiah De Disciple

Josiah De Disciple is also included in the list as a provider of exclusive tones. His album was already released when he approached the decks of Groove Cartel, using the platform to promote the majestically produced new album: Spirts of Makaoela 2.

Josiah included an intro from the album in the mix, while giving fans a full understanding of the project. His sound can easily be differentiated from other producers of amapiano.
